New Year, New Trends

Published date: 18 December 2018

We asked Sadie Phillips, Director of FMB Insurance, what she predicted would be the main trends we see in the New Homes warranty world in 2019.

Modular Housing

Fast to build, with lower costs than traditional construction, modular homes are could assist in reaching house building targets as well as giving first time buyers a lower cost option to get them on the property ladder. We are currently looking into warranty solutions specifically for this type of development.

Rural Commercial Conversions and Barn Conversions

Relaxation in planning laws for the conversion of farm buildings into residential dwellings has contributed to the increasing number of warranty applications for rural conversions. We love these types of development and will happily discuss warranty options with anyone thinking of undertaking one.

Building Upwards

A lack of space in urban areas and an increasing awareness around the risks of excavating basements means that we are seeing a growing number of warranty applications for additional stories on existing buildings.

Discerning Developer

Members are increasingly discerning about their warranty choices. Where previously price has been the biggest factor in choosing a warranty provider, we now see that members are instead looking more closely at the security of the insurer, inspection regime and policy coverage. At FMB Insurance we are happy to speak with developers and provide “warranty health checks” to ensure you have the best protection on the market.

Discerning Consumer

We think over 2019 there will be a growing trend towards consumers being more selective about their builder choices. Consumers are seeking quality over price. They are looking at testimonials, accreditations and insurances when choosing their builder. They are looking for a master builder.

Micro-homes

31% of homeowners believe a good way to solve the housing shortage in the UK is to build more micro-homes in urban areas.  We anticipate that we will start to provide more structural warranties for this type of work throughout 2019.
