Public Liability Insurance

Public Liability explained

Public Liability Insurance is good practice within the construction industry. It can give you peace of mind when even the smallest of mistakes happen, such as:

  • You drill through a waterpipe and damage your client’s possessions.
  • You drop materials as you’re walking into the house and damage them.
  • A homeowner trips over your toolbox and injures themselves.
  • You reverse into your client’s drive and scratch their car.

If you’re doing work for the council or a commercial business, you’ll most likely have to submit your Public Liability when you tender for the job.

If you’re a member of the Federation of Master Builders, you’re required to have Public Liability insurance for your company.

What does Public Liability cover?

This type of business insurance covers you for the compensation of any damage to a third-party property such as a client’s home or their neighbour’s property. As well as injury to a third-party individual directly related to your building works – e.g., an individual that isn’t covered by your Employer’s Liability policy.

Your coverage will be dependent on your insurer and business – please check your individual policy for detailed information about what you’re covered for.
